Core Wire Diameter
The core is galvanized steel wire beneath the PVC or vinyl layer. Common production diameters range from 2.0 to 4.0 mm. The order must identify the core wire diameter separately; it is not the same value as the finished coated wire diameter.
Finished Wire Diameter
Finished wire diameter includes the galvanized steel core and the PVC coating measured over it. A 3.0 mm core, for example, will have a larger finished diameter after coating. Confirm both values, the coating thickness, and the allowed tolerance on the purchase order.
Fence Height and Roll Length
PVC chain link fabric can be supplied in roll heights from approximately 0.5 to 6.0 m and roll lengths from approximately 4 to 50 m, subject to wire, mesh, and packing conditions. The requested height and length should be stated as finished roll dimensions.
Selvage Options
Knuckle selvage folds the wire end back to form a closed edge. Twist selvage leaves a twisted end. Knuckle-twist combines the two finishes, with one edge knuckled and the other twisted. Specify the top and bottom edge arrangement separately when required.
| Specification | Available Options |
| Core wire diameter | 2.0-4.0 mm or project specified |
| Finished wire diameter | Core plus PVC coating; confirm separately |
| Mesh opening | 20 by 20 mm, 50 by 50 mm, 60 by 60 mm, 80 by 80 mm, or custom |
| Roll height | Approximately 0.5-6.0 m |
| Roll length | Approximately 4-50 m |
| Selvage | Knuckle, twist, knuckle-twist, or specified combination |
| Weaving | Interwoven diamond chain link fabric |

The galvanized steel core carries the mechanical load of the fabric. A PVC or vinyl outer coating covers the core and isolates the metal from outdoor moisture and incidental rubbing. The coating requirement should identify color, coating thickness or finished diameter, and the required surface condition.
Coverage must be continuous around the wire except at intentional cut faces. Check for exposed wire caused by pinholes, scratches, peeling, or coating pullback. Color should be compared with an approved sample or reference during production and final inspection.
The core and coating are separate specification items. A galvanizing requirement does not define the PVC compound, and a color name does not define coating thickness or adhesion. List each requirement independently in the quotation.
Black Vinyl-Coated Chain Link Fence
Black PVC coating is used when the fence should have a dark, low-contrast appearance beside buildings, shade structures, and landscaping. Confirm black color reference, coating thickness, finished diameter, mesh, and selvage separately.
Green Vinyl-Coated Chain Link Fence
Green PVC coating is commonly selected for gardens, parks, sports areas, schools, and planted boundaries. Confirm the shade or color reference before production, since green tones can vary between compounds and batches.
PVC Coating Processes Used for Chain Link Fence
For U.S. B2B orders, “PVC coated” is not a complete coating specification. Name the process on the product specification and quotation, and state the steel core diameter separately from the finished coated diameter.
ASTM F668 distinguishes extruded, extruded-and-adhered, and fused-and-adhered coatings. The comparison below describes construction choices, not a test certificate for a particular roll. Confirm the supplied process before ordering.
| Coating process | Extruded | Extruded and adhered | Fused and bonded |
| Bonding method | PVC sleeve; no added adhesive bond | Extruded sleeve plus adhesive layer | Heat-fused coating bonded to the wire |
| Surface protection | PVC barrier over metallic coating | PVC barrier with a bonded interface | Bonded polymer barrier; specify PVC |
| Abrasion resistance | Verify for routine handling | Check wear separately from adhesion | Verify against the specified wear test |
| Coating adhesion | Not an adhesive-bonded construction | Adhesive bond; test retention | Fused bond; test retention |
| Typical applications | Residential and general commercial boundaries | Warehouses, factories, commercial yards | Industrial sites with stricter coating criteria |
| Relative cost | Generally lower | Generally above plain extrusion | May be higher; compare like-for-like quotes |
Extruded PVC Coating for Standard Fence Applications
An extrusion die applies a PVC sleeve around the galvanized wire. Plain extrusion does not add the adhesive bond used in extruded-and-adhered systems. It is the simpler construction for residential boundaries, ordinary commercial yards, and routine outdoor fencing.
For repeat orders in standard colors and sizes, this process is generally the lower-cost option. Check coating thickness around the wire, surface continuity, and sleeve movement at a cut end. Protect it from sharp guides, dragging, and tool contact during weaving and installation. Do not select it for heavy abrasion solely on price.
Extruded and Adhered PVC Coating for Improved Wire Protection
An adhesive layer bonds the extruded PVC to the metallic-coated core. Compared with an unbonded sleeve, this construction is intended to resist sliding and pullback when the wire is bent, handled, or cut.
Warehouse boundaries, factory yards, and commercial properties are candidate applications where coating retention matters. Surface preparation, adhesive application, and extrusion conditions must work together; adding adhesive is not a substitute for an adhesion test. The additional material and process controls generally raise cost above plain extrusion.
Fused and Bonded PVC Coating for Demanding Applications
In this process, heat fuses the coating material and bonds it to the metallic-coated wire. It is an option to evaluate for industrial perimeters and outdoor projects with stricter coating-retention requirements.
Temperature, surface preparation, and the coating formulation require close control. Compare bend, adhesion, and abrasion results before accepting a higher price. A fused-and-bonded designation alone does not establish a service life or make the fence suitable for every security application. Specify PVC expressly: some fused polymer systems use a different resin.
Virgin PVC Resin Without Recycled or Reprocessed Material
Production orders may specify virgin PVC resin and prohibit recycled feedstock, reprocessed PVC, and production regrind. Request a material declaration and resin lot identification before accepting a virgin-resin claim.
An outdoor PVC compound also contains ingredients such as pigments, stabilizers, and plasticizers. Specifying virgin resin does not mean the compound contains resin alone. A controlled resin source and compound recipe reduce one source of batch variation; color, flexibility, surface finish, and adhesion still need separate checks. Virgin material alone does not prevent cracking or peeling.
Consistent Core Wire Tensile Strength for Stable Weaving
Specify a tensile-strength range for the galvanized core, along with diameter tolerance and a bending requirement. Check incoming wire samples before coating and weaving. Abrupt differences in wire diameter or bending response can cause feeding snags, uneven forming, and repeated machine adjustments.
Core wire properties and PVC thickness need separate controls. Die centering, line speed, and material flow govern the coating layer; a tensile-strength check does not establish its thickness. Record both the metallic-coated core diameter and the finished PVC-coated diameter.
